Grant Writing Workshops
As an accomplished grant writer, I enjoy sharing my skills and experience with others. I believe that we need to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations and local governments to obtain more funding for their needs.
I offer two grant writing workshops:
In law school they used to tell us they were trying to make us “think like lawyers”. My classes focus on helping participants learn to “think like grant writers”. Grant writing is persuasive writing, which is different than descriptive writing. An effective grant writer must make a strong case for why their proposal should be funded, not just describe the good work their organization wants to do. We discuss the standard components of a grant and each participant verbally outlines how they would approach this section for their own project. I assist by giving suggestions, “reframing” their statements and emphasizing the most persuasive logic. That way the group gets to hear how an experienced grant writer would approach not only their project but everyone else’s project as well. This repetition helps to integrate the principles of successful grant writing.
Both of these courses are very INTENSIVE course. We spend a lot of time in interaction and discussion, so the maximum class size is 25. Participants should be motivated and willing to work, but they do not all have to be experienced in grant writing. The classes are valuable for students at all levels of ability and experience. It is important that all participants have a project in mind for funding, though they do not need to have identified an actual grant opportunity.
Course and workshop fees are reasonable. Please contact me for more details.
